We have 1000 litres of hand picked, winery pressed Pinot Gris from Washington’s Columbia Gorge AVA and we are offering a rare winemaking experience. Join is as we hand craft this juice into an exceptional wine.

You will be a part of the process. Learn about yeast strains, fermentation, acid balancing, alcohol testing, stabilizing and filtering wines. Design and produce a wine label. Best of all, use winery equipment to bottle and package your wine.

Hand Picked Organic Gewurztraminer – It is Happening Right Now

20160914_080702Blair, Nathan and our friend Dave, are hard at work at Kozier Organic Vineyard picking by hand 4000 pounds of Organic Gewurztraminer for our next tank run. We are taking Do It Yourself wine making to a whole new level at the Wine Works. Once the grapes are picked, the boys are taking the grapes next door to Three Sisters Winery for crushing, de-stemming and pressing. They will be hightailing it back to Nanaimo with their cargo. Three Sisters has harvested and produced wines from Kozier vineyards. A quick search of their organic wine prices online will give you an idea of the going price in BC. We are so pleased to be able to finally say ‘YES, we have that’  to our customers who are looking for organic wines.

Because you will be actively participating in the production and packaging of this wine, your wine will not be taxed to the same extent as commercial products. We will be getting this wine underway shortly. Drop in and give the juice a try if you are interested, it will be chilling out in our stainless steel, temperature controlled fermentation tank for a few days still. Join the tank launch party where you’ll learn about yeast and how to initiate a healthy fermentation. Drop in and check on your wine’s progress throughout the following months. When we are nearing completion, we need your input to help us with the final stages of this fine wine. Bottling parties are lots of fun, you’ll get to jump in on the assembly line and work with true winery equipment to fill and package your wine. A very social time is had by all.

We anticipate this wine will be priced at $12 per bottle. We are only producing 100 cases and they are selling really, really fast. If you want in, please contact us as soon as possible.

Below are a few shots of the harvest at Kozier Organic Vineyard. It was the first time out in the vineyards for Nathan and Dave and they had a pretty great time. The grapes have to be picked very gently and it is finicky and sticky work. As the totes were filled, Blair would drive them over to the press pad. The grapes were then loaded into the hopper and fed into the crusher and de-stemmer. From there, the crushed grapes are pumped over to the press. After pressing, the juice gets pumped over to our waiting transport vessel. When the tote was full to rim, the boys, rather tired by this point, headed for the ferry.

If you are in the vicinity of the Wine Works, Thursday, Sept 15th, we will be pumping over into the tank. Drop in and see what’s going on! From the banks of the Similkameen River, we bring you Lady Hawk Riesling

For a very long time, we have wanted to offer a locally grown wine, and it is not as easy as it may sound. After scouring BC’s Okanagan Valley we found a vineyard to work with. Lady Hawk Vineyard is located just outside of the quaint town of Keremeos. Lady Hawk has supplied Lang Vineyards and other notable Okanagan wineries and we are pretty excited to add the Wine Works to the list (we’re playing with the big boys now!)
In October, Blair and Fiona had the pleasure of picking just under two tonnes of deliciously ripe Riesling, a job that is far less glamorous than it sounds. It is hard and sticky work. We brought the grapes back to Nanaimo, pressed them and placed them into cold storage, as our tanks were full of Rosé and Pinot Gris.

Well, it is time to fill those tanks up again. If you are interested in a case or two of Lady Hawk Riesling, please contact us and we will secure your spot on the list. We only have 30 cases left so please, do not wait too long if you are interested.

The Wine Works invites you to participate fully in the winemaking process from beginning to end. Learn about wine yeasts, nutrients, acid balancing and the importance of temperature controlled fermentation. Be a part of the tasting panel when the wine is nearing completion. Join the bottling line when the wine is finished. During our last bottling party, we bottled 1200 bottles in just under 2 hours and we had a lot of fun in the process.

Tank Release Party, Let the Wine Flow Friday, May 6th 2016, 3pm to 7pm

When visiting the store, many of you have asked “what is going on in those tanks”. Blair and I would like to invite you to our tank bottling party, you can see first hand what our tank program is all about. Feel free to drop in, bring a friend if you want, and join in the fun.

Back in September, we got a call from our grape broker telling us that we could not miss out on this wine making opportunity. Blair hustled down to the Washington/Oregon border with his truck and trailer. Wind Walker Vineyard lies on a bench high above the Hood River directly in line with Mount Hood Volcano. As he arrived, the vineyard workers were just getting started on our Pinot Gris. First comes crushing and destemming, the grapes were moved through a large auger like machine which separated the grapes from their stems and leaf matter. Two tonnes of Pinot Gris grapes were dropped into the press and juiced. The juice was then run though a chiller and pumped over into Blair’s waiting transport vessel. He then high tailed it up the interstate, cleared customs, made the ferry and the wine begins.

After establishing acid and sugar levels, we knew we had an excellent vintage on our hands. We conducted a slow, temperature controlled, fermentation to retain all the flavours and aromatics that were held within. The resulting wine has wonderful mouth feel and a long finish, it is bursting with flavours of ripe pear, citrus and baked apple.

Please set aside time on Friday to join us for bottling, it will be an ‘all hands on deck’ event as we have over 1000 bottles to fill. We will have food, music and, of course, wineglasses, so that you can enjoy a sample of this extraordinary wine. If you are unable to join us on Friday, please contact Fiona to make alternate arrangements. The terms of our Liquor Licence do not permit us to store bottled product on site.

We have been hearing from many of our clients that they are interested in making smaller amounts of wine (15 bottles at a time) so we have spent some time reviewing our industries regulations. Here is an excerpt from the Liquor Control Board.

The Wine Works is allowed to help clients connect with other like-minded wine drinkers to start and share wine but we cannot organize it, that is up to you.

This is good news for those of you who are looking to share wine for whatever reason, be it storage space, ease of getting your wine home or simply to put more variety into your wine cellar, now we have an option for you. Our ‘sign up board or similar device’ is located at the front desk. If you are interested in sharing a batch of wine, add your name to the list and when a partner is found, arrangements can be made to get the wine started. Simple as that!



waving-tree-vineyardWe are excited to be able to offer you a delicious Nebbiolo Rosé from Waving Tree Vineyards, WA. Rose juice is produced by pressing the red grapes and letting the juice pick up color from being in contact with the skins for a few hours. The grape skins are then removed, and the juice is left with a beautiful hue and summer fruit profiles like raspberry, strawberry and peach. We are very pleased with the characteristics that the raw juice is showing.

Rosé is an extremely popular choice of wine in Europe and sales have grown quickly in North America ( 41% last year while white and red sales grew by only 1%). It is versatile, stunning in a glass, and can be produced as a sparkling wine as well. It may possibly be the ultimate pairing for turkey and cranberry sauce.

Only 100 cases are available so please let us know soon if you are interested. The bottling event is be slated for early December. You could use your Rosé for Christmas gifts, but if I were you, I would be a Grinch and put it in your own cave high on a mountain.

Wind Walker Vineyard, Pinot Gris

The fabulous response to the first Pinot Gris tank The timing of harvest meant an immediate road trip to White Salmon, WA just outside of Portland, OR to pick up 1000 liters of fresh pressed Pinot Gris. The grapes were grown at an altitude of 1300 ft on a plateau overlooking the White Salmon River, in an area known as the Columbia Gorge AVA (American Viticultural Area). Grapes grown in this AVA are typically warm climate varietals. Growers rely on drip irrigation to regulate vine growth in this warm, arid and gusty region. Soils are varied, most are heavily depleted volcanic or more recent sedimentary deposits. Due to the unique climate and geography found in the Gorge, this AVA exhibits a wide range of terroir in a relatively small region; it is marketed as a “world of wine in 40 miles”. Our hugely successful, first tank of Pinot Gris originated from a vineyard a few miles east of Wind Walker. We are looking forward to producing another Pinot Gris as flavourful and as lively as our first run. Space is limited to 100 cases. Please call us to reserve your position.

pinot-grisOh my goodness, we are full of changes, perhaps you have noticed the shiny stainless steel 1000 litre tank in our front room. We have decided to offer our clients access to winery grade juices. Currently, we have a Pinot Gris very near to completion, from White Salmon Vineyard in Washington State’s Columbia Gorge AVA (Agricultural Viticulture Area). Our objective is to select quality varietal juices from well-established vineyards, that are essential for a well-stocked wine cellar. The great news is that you no longer have to buy 30 bottles at a time, you can buy by the case. Our aim is to keep these wines between $8-10 per bottle.

We encourage you to get involved with the process, to release your inner winemaker. At the start of each new tank wine, you will be invited to an informative “launch” party where you will be a part of the pitching of the yeast. From that point on, you are encouraged to drop in anytime to check on the progress of your wine. We will let you know when interesting lab work is being done so that you can join in for the experience. We want you to be a part of the fascinating process which is fine winemaking.

Warning! 1000 litres sounds like a lot, but it is not. There is only space for about 100 – 120 cases of finished wine. If you are interested, you need to join our program early.

Our next tank is a Rose from Waving Tree Vineyard that can be bottled as a still wine or, if you prefer, it can be sparkled. AND we have a second tank arriving in September which we will be using for our first red wine. We will be starting from scratch with grapes. This is going to get messy!
